How absolutely wonderful to combine Yoga and youth. Wow! Think about the Hope, Promise, Growth, Patience, and Potential being cultivated.
Teaching yoga for children, tweens, teens, and families, I have seen that everyone can enjoy yoga. It is obvious that everyone especially appreciates the relaxation at the end. Even the busiest, most active kids request extra long savasana. One particularly rambunctious girl, aged 10, recently asked, “ Hey, do you ever have a class that's just savasana. Because, I would definitely come to that!" Another child, a young boy, age 6, wistfully described his savasana experience as his favorite part of a recent yoga class. “ I wish I could go back there again. It was like I was floating (pause) on a cloud (pause) with God.”
Children and adults alike are feeling pressures and stress daily. We all live in a very fast paced world, and inevitably this pace trickles down to our children. Even the youngest are feeling pressures and stress. When kids come into the studio for yoga class, they all want to share about their day/week, and how stressful it has been. One little girl, age 8, lamented that her birthday cupcake had fallen on the floor, but looking forward to coming to a Yoga class that afternoon had made her feel better.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote, and Ella Fitzgerald sang "Into each life some rain must fall." True. But, it's also true that we all have the ability to bloom and radiate joy in this beautiful garden of life. The practice and teachings of Yoga helps everyone, young and old, to better deal with stress and disappointments.
The Light Within Yoga studio currently offers weekly classes for Tweens and Teens ( Thursday evenings at 5) , monthly classes for Families (one Friday night per month) and a week long Yoga + Creativity camp each summer in July. Details are all available by visiting www.thelightwithinyoga.com .
